Roman Polanski is no longer “wanted and desired,” as he’s been arrested by the Swiss police for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, according to an article by the Associated Press. He could now face extradition to the United States for the crime that caused him to flee from France.
Polanski, who is now 76 years old, was on his way to the Zurich Film Festival to receive an honorary award when he was stopped by police. The U.S. will now have to file an extradition claim to have him deported to Los Angeles. (more…)

ABC’s Flash Forward debuted last night, and while I’ll give it another chance, the series premiere was underwhelming.
Flash Forward is about a worldwide event where everyone on the planet blacks out for two minutes and 17 seconds. Except they didn’t actually black out; instead, they saw glimpses of their own future. Some saw good things, but most saw a time when things were worse than ever. As the daughter of the main character (played by Joseph Fiennes) describes, she saw a time where there were no more good days. (more…)

Studio executives should have a good sense for future trends, correct? They are the ones intimately involved in the business of movies, and as much as we gripe about the crap that is shoveled into theaters, the fact is that studios make a good amount of money. These executives, to some extent or another, know what they’re doing. (more…)

Every once in a while a movie comes along that defies expectations, that rocks its very essence, that destroys all hope of anything ever succeeding it. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not that film.
If X-Men 3 was a disappointment – and it was – Wolverine is a mitigated disaster, full of hammy dialogue, rushed storytelling and crappy special effects. The good news is that the movie is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray, which means you can watch those embarrassing effects in crystal clarity. (more…)

Capitalism: A Love Story, the new well-timed (as always) film by Michael Moore, strikes hard and cuts to the heart of yet another one of the country’s key issues, the manipulation and greed at the core of our capitalist system. Moore traces the history of our capitalist system from our constitution, which mentions little to nothing about it, all the way through to our current economic meltdown. Moore follows the style set predominantly in his past two films, Fahrenheit 9/11 and Sicko, relying more on the stories of the victims than those of the perpetrators to tell his story. Part of this probably spawns from the fact that most of the villains in his docus wouldn’t step within a 100 feet of Moore, let alone give him an interview. It seems that the Charleton Heston-esque image killing may not be standard course for his upcoming film endeavors.

It appears to be almost a certainty. In an interview, Harrison Ford had this to say about the prospects of Indiana Jones 5, to be titled Indiana Jones and The Quest to Be Better Than the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:
“The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again.” (more…)

Patrick Swayze has unfortunately passed away at the age of 57. He died after battling pancreatic cancer, a particularly deadly form of the disease. He passed away peacefully with his family at his side.
Despite his diagnosis becoming front-page news in early 2008 (including reports that he had days to live), he continued to work, primarily on the recently canceled A&E series “The Beast,” in which he played a rogue cop. Swayze is best known for his roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost. Though he was rarely seen in any major releases since the early-to-mid nineties (following his turn as an adrenaline-loving bad guy in Point Break), Swayze was a worldwide star, whose credits also included Red Dawn (one of my favorites) and Donnie Darko.

As my roommate likes to remind me, I’m always two weeks behind on viral videos. By the time I see something funny, he’s already seen it a dozen times. At least this time, I have an excuse: I was on vacation, away from computers and technology and electricity. (more…)

A couple years ago, one of my friends and coworkers invited me to attend a film premiere at the Seattle Art Museum, and I, being a movie buff, obliged her. We showed up and waited in the lobby for half an hour as the previous screening – yes, there were two consecutive showings – emptied from the theater. Another half hour or so later, along with the second large crowd of the evening, I watched Bookie, directed by Bao Tran. (more…)
