As my roommate likes to remind me, I’m always two weeks behind on viral videos. By the time I see something funny, he’s already seen it a dozen times. At least this time, I have an excuse: I was on vacation, away from computers and technology and electricity.

Anyway, for those of you who’ve seen the Avatar movie trailer – and by now, that’s everyone – you know the trailer isn’t nearly as awesome as people were hoping for. There are high hopes for James Cameron’s action epic – his first in over a decade – but the trailer makes his movie look like a glorified (and weird) video game about Ferngully. Rumors are that audiences who’ve seen the longer, 16-minute preview had better reactions, but that could just as easily be convenient public relations at work.

Anyway, if you haven’t watched the Avatar movie trailer, watch it now. And if you have, see what Adolf Hitler has to say about it. I couldn’t say things better myself. Except I can’t speak German.

A couple years ago, one of my friends and coworkers invited me to attend a film premiere at the Seattle Art Museum, and I, being a movie buff, obliged her. We showed up and waited in the lobby for half an hour as the previous screening – yes, there were two consecutive showings – emptied from the theater. Another half hour or so later, along with the second large crowd of the evening, I watched Bookie, directed by Bao Tran.

The movie is a 20-minute short film about – yes, you guessed it – a bookie (Ken Quitugua) who decides to put his neck on the line to save the bar girl he loves (the absolutely gorgeous Angela Adto), despite the fact that they both work for a not-so-nice gangster. Set in the 1960’s, Bookie is surprisingly realistic and entertaining. It’s well-written and acted, which is somewhat rare for a short film. Most impressively, the direction is excellent; watching the film – a Hollywood-looking flick made for pennies – I thought to myself, “This guy is going somewhere.”

He hasn’t made it big yet, but he has won a variety of awards for Bookie; it’s played in a variety of festivals, including the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). Furthermore, Bao Tran was recently profiled and interviewed in the latest edition of Seattle Magazine – read the article now.

Furthermore, you can watch this great little film – Bookie – right now:

Universal Pictures just released the movie trailer for the upcoming horror-comedy Cirque de Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, about a kid who goes to a freak show only to discover that it’s run by a vampire. Bored with his current life, he decides to accept the vampire’s invitation to become one himself. He then begins to learn about all the cool new powers he has. John C. Reilly plays the elder vampire.

Frankly, the movie doesn’t look all that funny. The trailer has its moments, but it’s hard to tell whether the film is really going to be funny or not. Most of the jokes evoke chuckles but nothing more. Watch the trailer for the movie and let me know what you think:

I finally got around to watching the teaser trailer for the upcoming comedy Cemetery Junction, which is written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The movie, which doesn’t come out until sometime in 2010 (release date to be determined), apparently doesn’t have much footage yet, because the teaser trailer pretty much features Gervais and Merchant talking to the screen. Ralph Fiennes, who also stars in the film, joins them partway through.

Even though the teaser trailer is hardly a good representation of the film, it is pretty damn funny. Gervais “admits” that Ralph Fiennes was not his first choice, because he doesn’t have much experience doing comedies. Merchant interjects and tells him that he is an Oscar winner. Fiennes counters and says he actually was just nominated for an Oscar, for Schindler’s List. Gervais points out that that movie won a hell of a lot of Academy Awards, but Fiennes didn’t.

Classic.

I recommend you watch the Cemetery Junction teaser trailer immediately. You may also go to our Cemetery Junction details page.

Actually, I watched the trailer about 20 minutes ago or so, and now I can’t recall a single important thing from the entire trailer. I remember Charlize Theron screwing around with another dude, and Kim Basinger screwing around with another dude, and a couple friends telling a young guy that he needs to stop seeing his girlfriend… oh, and there’s a plain crash in a field, which I’m guessing is where the movie’s title comes from.

The Burning Plain has some potential, but the trailer doesn’t give much hope. Learn more about The Burning Plain or go here to watch The Burning Plain trailer. The film will be released in limited theaters on September 17, 2009.

Instead of allowing things to run their course, however, Neeson sets out to meet and get into the mind of his opposition, his obsession and rage getting the best of them. Murder may or may not ensue.

The Other Man has a well constructed trailer, with a good soundtrack and interesting setup. The first half of the movie trailer is particularly strong and intriguing. Overall, the movie looks like it could be good, and given the acting talent involved, that’s wouldn’t be much of a surprise.

However, the trailer does stumble a bit in the second half as it appears there isn’t a whole lot of material available. Like I said, it’s well constructed, but you can tell they’re grasping at straws when exciting music is set against a shot of Neeson angrily knocking chess pieces off a table. It appears that The Other Man may not be as tense as the marketing department wants us to believe.

Watch The Other Man trailer for yourself and let me know what you think.

Jeff Bridges returns to his roots in TRON Legacy, the sequel to the 1980’s virtual reality flick Tron. The movie is scheduled to debut sometime in 2010, and will most likely be in 3D. Below is a concept video that debuted at Comic-Con, which features two motorcyclists racing through a virtual world.

It looks like Speed Racer, only good. How good? That remains to be seen. The movie is going to need a legitimate plot and screenplay, because we’ve passed the age where special effects alone can “wow” people. In a world where we have some pretty incredible visual effects in video games, the weird visuals in the movie don’t necessarily offer a realistic environment. But, TRON Legacy still looks pretty cool…

I do remember seeing a very similar video like this a while back; I can’t remember if it’s the exact same one only with the film’s new title, but it may be.
